From the air

Not as breathtaking as George Steinmetz but still a wonderful, if early, morning down in North Carolina. I have dreams of flying in that little plane, and at times it was tough to know where the dreaming ended and the assignment began.

The Day

This was a day, with pictures for the paper and pictures for myself in between, even though it felt like there was no time to rest and no time to eat and no time for anything but pictures and driving and looking at pictures and driving some more. Nothing amazing, but still a day where things in the world were made a little more beautiful.

On the Road, Colorado

I've been staying on the road for the past few weeks, between North Carolina and Connecticut and New York and finally Colorado, where there's a little trailer in the middle of nowhere I've been visiting since I was born. I brought friends with this time, and enjoyed a weekend of drinking and fires and eating and bb guns and general happiness.

Katie Barnes and Turtles: an ode

I thought about the wonderful Katie Barnes today when shooting turtles in a tiny, poorly lit outbuilding behind an aquarium. There's beauty there, waiting to be seen, in dark water and the reflection created by fluorescent bulbs. Katie finds beauty every single day, and that's why her departure from newspapers to freelancing will be such an adventure. Nothing ever stops her from making pictures. All. The. Time. She is prolific, talented, and lovely. You go, Katie! Taking the world away from newspapers by storm!
