Final Service
I was fortunate enough to photograph the final service of a church in east Dallas yesterday. It was one of those days that make me happy to do the work I do. Hugs from old women, stories of marriages and baptisms and funerals, singing, and all in a room with no air conditioning. Taking what I learned at the Herald, now that I look back on it: moments, moments, first and foremost. It was sad to witness the end of a community, though a new one will replace it. I'm getting used to the heat-- assuming that I'll be sweating all day and just taking it in stride.

Feature Hunting
There's no rule that you can't treat a big city like a small town. You stop your car and get out and sit on the stoop for a while and find out as many stories as you could hope. The skyline may be bigger and the geography harder to navigate, but perhaps it isn't as impenetrable as originally imagined. The pace is certainly faster, and the mosquitos meaner, but I'm slowly becoming more excited than overwhelmed.

Where I've Been
On vacation in the cabin in Colorado. A trailer with a room built on the side, my grandparents' place back in the day. Perfect days of doing not much at all but grilling, drinking and reading The Virginian. I just moved to Dallas yesterday, and will be here all summer at The Dallas Morning News. Exciting!
