On Trying

Sometimes it gets difficult to remember those crucial maxims from early on: arrive early, stay late. Shoot for the paper and then shoot for yourself. Find something interesting in every situation. Be patient. Wait. Some days are long days, with hours of office work and stories falling though and budget cuts and every variety of bullshit, but, in the end, really, the best we can do is to try our hardest to make the best pictures we possibly can.

On the subject of pretty

A horrible, rainy day and an assignment to photograph a girl, now 17, who was abandoned at birth. No light in the living room. Upstairs, one tiny window. Sometimes, the only salvation is one tiny window.

The best things come in pairs

A weekend in the rain on a farm in Washington. The ferry at night. Hot dogs. Sleeping in complete darkness. Burning brush at sunrise. And some pictures need to be paired.
