More Rural Healthcare

Working more on the rural healthcare project in Marlin, with just a few days left at the Dallas Morning News. Oh goodness. Moving is a crazy project that I've been in the middle of for the last three years.

Models at the Mall

There was a sliver of light, and I spent a while playing with it. What else would I be doing?

Remiss

I'm taking a break from blogging because everything else in my life has become wildly busy. I have a week left in Dallas, and in this week I'll be driving between the city and Marlin, to smooth out all the rough edges of my rural health story. I'll be packing up my bags, cleaning the car, looking for a new place to live in a new city, and somehow saying goodbye to the the people at the Morning News, who are giving me great advice about this next chapter. I'll post some next week once I've spent some more time in Marlin. Today is an audio editing day. Also, a coffee drinking day. As is every day.

Sometimes you run into an editor who pushes you to think, really think, about the work you're doing and what you want to say with it. Right now I have the privilege of working with such an editor, and in looking back on my take from the last few days in Marlin, I can see his hand in so much of it. I spent a fair amount of time trying to make sense of place pictures that would give an viewers a sense of what Marlin is like as a community, and I could easily have forgotten that critical aspect of the story had we not talked about it before I went down. The audio will be a huge help in that regard-- people describing the town they live in and how hard it is for them to get care. These images may seem to be a departure from the real "story" part of the story, but I have a feeling they'll be important in the final product. I'm getting excited to start working with the audio. And also to do my laundry and sit on the couch for an evening. It's been a crazy few weeks.

Rural Health: House Calls

Down in Marlin for a few days, continuing to work on the rural heath story. One important part of the story is house calls-- driving out into the country and giving care to people who can't come into town. Plus, I'm recording audio-- how amazing. It's been a while, but it's magical for the right story.

Rural Health

I'm starting a new story about rural health care, and am excited to be back in Texas next week to shoot more. These are from my first day working on the story-- fumbling around, getting a sense of the place.

Police Dog

The newest member of the Dallas Police is German Shephard EL. I don't mind these press conference assignments, as long as I can arrive early and catch an actual moment before all the boring podium stuff. And I may have a future in dog portraits, given my recent activity. I'm keeping all my options open.

Slow Food

Spent the whole day at the farmer's market and then at home with a chef, making some really good food. Practicing with my flash, the bane of my internship. Actually, I'm learning (through necessity, the best means) how to incorporate some (gasp) lighting technique into certain assignments. It's rough going, but it's getting better.

Moses Pup

Spent a few days in Colorado with the boy and the pup and my parents. I challenge you to find a more handsome mug than this one. When I'm unemployed in the fall, I may try and make a go of it just shooting cute dog photos. Yikes.
